OpenVMS

Ever wonder how Windows got its name?

Windows NT officially stands for 'New Technology.' The open secret? W-N-T is V-M-S plus one. Someone at Microsoft was making a point.

Microsoft Windows NT

Not an obvious OpenVMS entry, but read on – Those of us of a certain age will remember Windows NT; it was released by Microsoft in 1993 (Windows NT 3.1) and was the first version of Windows to have a graphical user interface. The underlying technology went on to define all subsequent Windows versions, including XP, which was the consumer version of NT. Officially, Windows NT stood for Windows Next Technology. It has always been whispered in corridors that WNT was named that way because each letter is one greater than VMS, and this was someone’s (no names here) way of making a statement.
